12 Seriously Scrummy Apps for Seriously Scrummy Foodies
Gordon Ramsay iPadApp
Well, some of us might get a little bit shaky at the thought of Gordon Ramsay appearing in the kitchen . . . he gets so cross doesn’t he . . . but what about the food – we wouldn’t mind a few pointers on some of the delicious food he prepares (without the swearing which often goes with it). Well, with this Gordon Ramsay iPad app you have the one of the worlds best chefs right there, in your kitchen, helping you to prepare dinner. The app has loads and loads of video recipes, interactive guides, shopping lists. It’s so simple, stand up your iPad on the kitchen side and follow the fantastic recipes in your own time. How about that for a way to impress your friends and family (especially if you don’t tell them that Gordon Ramsay popped around to help you).
He’s certainly very enthusiastic isn’t he . . . and quick!
Rouxbe iPad App
Rouxbe is a professional cookery school which means that you can learn all of the secret tricks of the trade from the comfort of your own home. There’s tons of content for you to browse through, a team of professional chefs ready and waiting to answer all of your foody questions and even some tests to make sure that you’re actually learning as you go along. You do have to pay a small monthly fee for the privilege, but hey, in no time at all you could become a professional (chef that is).
Mmmm, I love Creme Brulee . . . but I’m not that confident about the burning bit at the end. Better have the fire department standing by just in case.
Instagram App
Yeah yeah, we get it . . . you like the dogs . . . well what about the FOOD!
Foodspotting App
Food spotting . . . now that certainly sounds like my type of activity – closely followed by food eating! It’s a really simple idea which has swept across America but hasn’t quite yet got the same following worldwide . . . it will come. The idea is that you take photos on your cell phone based on where you are, then upload them along with any food reviews which you have. Users can then browse the food available in a particular town, city or area and find photos and reviews of the amazing food available there.
See, it’s as easy as pie! The goodies in that bakery window sure looks appetizing . . .
Don’t Eat It
This one’s a bit like the flipside of Foodspotting. You can only log in using Foursquare but it really can help to save you from some grotty food. All you have to do is to enter a restaurant which you are thinking of visiting and if somebody else has eaten there and experienced poor hygiene and/or food then you’ll get a warning text. Some restaurants look terrific on the outside but you don’t always know what’s going on behind the kitchen door! People power . . .
Food Gawker App
Food Gawker is fantastic. If you’re a fan of gawking at photos of beautiful food . . . look no further. Food bloggers submit their photos from all around the world and the editor picks out the very best ones for the display. Once you’ve chosen a photo of what you fancy you will usually find a recipe to go with it if you do a little bit more clicking.
Food Buzz
Great name for an app don’t you think . . . food certainly gives me a buzz! Anyway, what Food Buzz does is to collate the very best food blog information from around the world (there are thousands of ‘em you know). This is what they say “we aggregate and curate 4.2 million posts from 19292 food blogs to bring quality content into the spotlight”. What a great place to go for inspiration when you really don’t know what you fancy.
Love Fresh
Maybe unusually, this one started life in the UK. Many people are realizing the importance of using their local produce, and Love Fresh is one way to connect you with your local produce and the people who produce it. You can create and then share special points of interest about companies in your local area who maybe deliver fresh fruit and veg, or local restaurants which specialize in serving delicious home cooked, locally produced food.
Google Recipe Search
Google Recipe Search is a great place to find that special recipe, ‘cos you know what, these days there are so many chefs, bloggers, cooks and experts who are trying to share their recipes with you online, it’s becoming a bit of a minefield. If you use Google recipe search you’ll be able to cut straight through to the important and the relevant, with searches based on the amount of people you’ll be cooking for, ingredients and other stuff, then it’ll search the web and find recipes which are exactly what you’re looking for.
Noms-In
Okay, picture the scene, you’ve just landed in a new city, it’s getting late, you’ve been on the road all day and you are absolutely starving. Where on earth do you start finding somewhere good to eat? It’s true, there are other apps available which have 1000s of reviews, but hey, who can be bothered with wading through all that . . . Noms-In is pretty new and there aren’t that many destinations to choose from as yet, but the whole design is built around the idea that you’ll be spending a couple of days in one place making it really quite powerful.
Dishtip
Sounds interesting! The Dishtip search engine rather cleverly uses semantic signals to help you find the particular dish which you’re after. You don’t have to search for restaurants by cuisine, you can simply search for things like “Apple Pie” or “French Toast” and you’ll get results with photos and user votes for exactly what you’re searching for . . . right there in the city you are searching.
Foodzy
Foodzy calls itself the Foursquare of food. It’s really neat because it helps you to keep a track of everything you’ve eaten throughout the day, and if you’ve had a good, healthy day you might be rewarded with a badge. You can also discover new products on Foodzy, maybe the stuff which someone among your social network of friends really enjoys . . . someone of similar eating habits to yourself. You’ll be able to calculate your daily calorie intake (20 calories equals 1 bit which sounds much more user friendly) so whether you’re trying to lose a few pounds, maintain a healthy weight or even gain a few pounds, Foodzy will make the calculations simple for you.
Great video . . . love it, love it, love it!
